SUMMARY:The feminist icon
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrench author and existentialist Simone de Beauvoir have had a considerable influence on feminist theory and gender studies around the world. Her landmark book considered the Bible of the feminist movement\, The Second Sex (1949) will soon be translated again in Hindi by Monica Singh\, with the support of our PAP Tagore programme. 2020 marks the first publication in France of Simone de Beauvoir’s The Inseparables. This captivating unpublished novel from 1954 tells the first passionate and tragic friendship between two rebellious young girls\, Simone de Beauvoir & Zaza. Simone de Beauvoir’s adopted daughter\, Sylvie Le Bon de Beauvoir\, had discovered this manuscript in Beauvoir’s private archives. Beauvoir referred to women as the Second Sex because they always seemed to be defined in relation to men. In the context of the Generation Equality Forum\, the French Institute is conducting a debate to revisit the impact of Beauvoir’s works through three generations\, represented by: \n\nSylvie Le Bon de Beauvoir\, Philosopher and Simone de Beauvoir’s adopted daughter\,\nDivya Dwivedi\, Philosopher\,\nMarine Rouch\, Historian\, PhD student in contemporary history (FRAMESPA)\,\nAditi Maheshwari\, Publisher at Vani Prakashan\,\nMonica Singh\, the Hindi translator of The Second Sex.\n\nModerator: renowned Indian translator and Associate Professor of Creative Writing at Ashoka University\, Mr. Arunava Sinha.

SUMMARY:Persepolis
DESCRIPTION:Persepolis is a semi-autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi. In powerful black-and-white comic strip images\, Satrapi tells the story of her life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen\, years that saw the overthrow of the Shah’s regime\, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution\, and the devastating effects of war with Iraq. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEight years old Marjane (Marji) who wants to become a prophet\, was brought up in a liberal family that supported education\, modernity forgiveness\, and justice and didn’t believe in the orthodox government regime. In this story\, Marji is going through revolutions\, war\, mourning\, exile\, depression but also learning more about life\, puberty\, and first love. \nShe survives wars and political suppression but a failed love affair made her life miserable. The book talks about how she lived and fights back in war times\, her struggles against orthodox society\, her divorce at the age of 21\, and how she finds refuge in France and has a new beginning. The author has written the text in an almost childish manner\, to reflect her innocence in the horrifying world. The book provides an alternative outlook into Iran for western countries who consumed the false and negative media attention given to Iran at that time. \nPersepolis has been adapted into an animated film and won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival 2007. The movie was named the Official French Selection for the Best Foreign Language Film. It is now published in Hindi by Vani Prakashan and the book is available in the Indian market. \nSpeakers\nMarjane Satrapi: author and film director\nAditi Maheshwari – Vani Prakashan\nVishwajyoti Ghosh – Moderator\nAppupen: author of the graphic novel\nNidheesh Tyagi: translator\, editor and poet

SUMMARY:Women in Science
DESCRIPTION:India and France have been working together for several decades to achieve common developmental goals in the field of science and research. To preserve the heritage of this longstanding collaboration\, the French Institute in India has initiated a project to document the scientific partnership between India and France across disciplines. \nThe prime objective of the project is to revisit and document the common history of science and technology between India and France. The context of the Generation Equality Forum also prompts us to question the visibility of the women who contributed to our common scientific progress. \nWomen have made contributions to science since the earliest of times. Diverse ideas and perspectives steer us toward progress\, toward life-changing solutions that help everybody. For scientific research to be impartial\, objective and accurate\, diversity and inclusion is inevitable. In these curated talks with experts from many different scientific fields\, astronomer and science historian Pranav Sharma explores the unique perspective women bring to the fields of science and STEM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWatch videosEp. 1: Dr. Archana Sharma - Being a woman in a gentlemen’s world\n\nEp 2: Dr. Shivani Chaturvedi - Creating the right role models\n\nEp. 3: Dr. Rohini Goldbole - Equity and Inclusion in Science\n\nEp. 4: Dr. Mythily Ramaswamy - Women in Mathematics\n\nEp. 5: Dr. Isabelle Daniel - The Emergence of Life on Earth
