SUMMARY:The Goncourt Choice of India
DESCRIPTION:The most prestigious French literary prize created in 1903\, The Goncourt Prize has been internationalized in 27 countries for 20 years now in the form of The Goncourt Choice. In 2022\, India proudly joins this illustrious list thanks to the collaborative efforts of Indian francophone students who love literature. The prize is supported by 10 institutions\, comprising the network of Alliances Françaises as well as 9 universities across India. \nThe contenders:\n\nLe Voyage dans l’Est by Christine Angot: a powerful novel\, which addresses incest by taking on various viewpoints\, that of the child\, of the teenager\, and finally of the young woman.\nMilwaukee Blues by Louis-Philippe Dalembert: poignant portrait of an ordinary man made extraordinary by his terrifying death. With his customary verve and wit\, Louis-Philippe Dalembert presents us with a lovable\, familiar character.\nLa plus secrète mémoire des hommes by Mohamed Mbougar Sarr: an astonishing novel about choosing between living and writing\, about the desire to go beyond the confrontation between Africa and the West.\nChild of a Bastard by journalist Sorj Chalandon\, a personal book confronting the disturbing truth exposed during his youth that his manipulative father had been a Nazi collaborator during the war.\n\nThe Goncourt Choice of India Laureate will be translated into Indian languages and will be supported by the IFI’s PAP Tagore programme. \nLearn more about the Goncourt Choice of IndiaOrganized with the collaboration of:

SUMMARY:Launch of the Alcazar
DESCRIPTION:The French Institute in India in collaboration with the publishing house Comix India is launching the English translation of Alcazar\, an award-winning French graphic novel by Simon Lamouret. \nThe Alcazar follows the lives of migrant construction workers building a residential complex in Bangalore. \nSimon will be in conversation with Bharath Murthy\, his Indian publisher and Mansi. The session will be moderated by Angshuman Chakraborty\, a comics collector. \nThis publication has been supported by the PAP Tagore programme \nFeb 20\, 2022 | 7 pm IST \nLive on YoutubeSimon Lamouret\nSimon Lamouret is a graphic novelist and illustrator based out of Toulouse\, France. \nA few years after graduating from Les Arts Décoratifs de Strasbourg\, he decided to move to Bangalore for a year. His initial plan of spending a year abroad turned into him spending several years in India: drawing and observing\, first in a spirit of novelty\, later in a more focused manner. \nThis journey is witnessed through his two graphic novels: Bangalore (2017) and L’Alcazar (2020) which he published in France. While the first was an autobiographical travelogue about the peculiarities one finds on the streets of a major Indian city\, the second attempted to depict the daily life of construction workers based on a thorough observation of a construction site near his house. \nMansi Kashatria\nMansi Kashatria is currently a PhD researcher in Cultural Studies based out of Norrköping\, Sweden. \nHaving a background in Migration Studies\, Rural Livelihoods\, and Geography\, she finds herself on the margins of these disciplines but with one foot always out in the world of contemporary art. Growing up under the post-colonial thought can be blamed for her critical and disjointed relationship with the discursive economy of contemporary art and its institutions. Her latest and ongoing research\, therefore\, hopes to develop a critical inquiry into how certain artistic practices can act as a site of resistance\, radicality\, and emancipation. \nThe research experience with Alcazar was pivotal for Mansi in not only establishing a collaboration with a dear friend who is a skilled graphic novelist but also in the way the entire research practice aimed for an accessible\, inclusive artwork that keeps the authorship of the narration with those whose lives we become a part of in the novel. \nBharath Murthy\nHe is a cartoonist\, filmmaker and editor/publisher. He edits and publishes Vérité\, a comics magazine for adults\, under the Comix India label. \nAngshuman Chakraborty\nAngshuman lives and works in New Delhi. An avid fan of the comics medium\, he started the YouTube channel “For the Love of Comics” in 2018.

SUMMARY:S.Thala – An Indian
DESCRIPTION:A choreographic study by the Annette Leday/Keli company\nConception: Annette Leday\, Hélène Courvoisier \nDirection and choreography: Annette Leday \nArtists: Annette Leday\, Hélène Courvoisier\, Kalamandalam Unnikrishnan Nair\, Sadanam Manikandan\, Annette Leday \nS.Thala is a dance performance inspired by Marguerite Duras’ Indian cycle. The creative process of S.Thala started in Kerala in December 2019 under the direction of Annette Leday\, a French choreographer and dancer immersed in Indian and French theatrical and dance forms. \nBy revisiting Duras’ fantasized India in this cycle and the very real one at the heart of her company’s productions\, Annette Leday and the dancers propose a poetic visual approach of Duras prose through a choreographed interpretation of her organic writing. \nFor Annette Leday\, “creating a contemporary dance performance is a bit like writing a poem”. S.Thala focuses more on exploring the relationships and emotions of the “characters” and the emblematic atmospheres of Duras’ universe than on trying to reproduce or illustrate the complex narrative schemes of her texts. \nVenue: Kerala Arts and Crafts Village\, Kovalam

SUMMARY:Book Launch : The Cane-Cutter's Song
DESCRIPTION:The French Institute in India in association with the Publishing house Speaking Tiger is launching the new release of the English translation of ‘La panse du chacal‘\, The Cane-Cutter’s Song by Raphaël Confiant. \nThe French author Raphaël Confiant will be in conversation with his translator Vidya Vencatesan\, the Mauritian writer Ananda Devi and the Mumbai-based Indian English poet Jerry Pinto. \nIn the Cane-Cutter’s Song\, originally published in French as La Panse du chacal\, award-winning Martinician author Raphaël Confiant illuminates the lesser-known side of the West Indian identity – the Indian side of the Creole\, and within it the story of thousands of lost Indians who longed to return home. \nSynopsis of the book\nLured by the promise of easy money in the faraway land of hope\, Adhiyaman Dorassamy embarks on a formidable crossing of 2 turbulent oceans so as to not end up like his parents in ‘the jackal’s belly’.\nAs the ship docks at the harbours of the French colony of Martinique\, the Dorassamys soon realize their predicament: like the thousands of ‘Coolies’ before them\, they are now to replace the freed Negro slaves in the sugarcane plantations. Ostracized by the former slaves and blinding subjected to the whims of the white planters\, these ‘Coolie’ Indians swiftly learn the art of survival and plunge into an unfamiliar world where just like their forgotten deities\, their language too has faded amongst the Creole words. \nOur partners\nSpeaking Tiger Books\nSpeaking Tiger Books is an independent publishing company based in New Delhi. Founded in September 2014\, the company publishes a diverse list comprising quality fiction and non-fiction from South Asia and the rest of the world. Among our authors are both veterans and exciting new voices: Nayantara Sahgal\, Ruskin Bond\, Shanta Gokhale\, Jerry Pinto\, Mark Tully\, Wendy Doniger\, Upamanyu Chatterjee\, Nandita Haksar\, Harsh Mander\, Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar\, Madhavi Menon and  Ravish Kumar\, to name a few. Our authors have won or been on shortlists of all major literary prizes\, including the Sahitya Akademi Award\, the Crossword Book Award\, the Hindu Literature Prize\, the DSC Prize for South Asian Fiction\, the JCB Prize and the Tata Literature Live Awards. \nOne of our key areas of focus is Indian and international literature in translation\, and among our award-winning translations are Baluta by Daya Pawar and When  I Hid My Caste by Baburao Bagul\, both translated by Jerry Pinto; Smritichitre by Lakshmibai Tilak\, translated by Shanta Gokhale; Beauty Is a Wound by Eka Kurniawan\, translated by Annie Tucker; and Istanbul Istanbul by Burhan Sönmez\, translated by Ümit Hussein. \nSpeaking Tiger also publishes books for children and young adults under its Talking Cub imprint\, with authors like Paro Anand\, Ruskin Bond\, Bulbul Sharma\, Ranjit Lal\, Subhadra Sengupta\, Bijal Vachharajani and Shabnam Minwalla. \nAbout the panelists\nRaphaël Confiant \nHe was born in Martinique. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Unsealed Chamber - The Transient Image
DESCRIPTION:ArtistsCurator’s essayThis year marks the 195th anniversary of the first successful experimentation with photography as a novel form and patented as a new invention by the French practitioner Joseph Nicéphore Niépce in 1827. In honour of this occasion\, Unsealed Chamber: The Transient Image is presenting four contemporary artists working with both analogue and digital methods\, reacting to vital transformations following a year of introspection in the course of the pandemic. \nThrough newly made productions\, Aparna Nori\, Arpan Mukherjee\, Indu Antony and Philippe Calia explore a sense of creative hybridity by melding both manual techniques and new media to reflect on questions of self\, society\, ecology and representation. With a focus on ongoing social concerns\, sometimes as subjects within their own images\, they make crucial contributions to the ever-growing cultural history of the craft of image-making and identity construction. \n⇲ Curated by Rahaab Allana\n⇲ Scenography is realized by Sukanya Baskar \n\nFree Entry. Open to all. \n\nGallery visits from 11 am to 7 pm (venue rules applicable) \n\nObserve social distancing and wear masks while in the gallery. \n\nThe number of visitors in the gallery may be regulated. \nCurator & Scenographer\nRahaab Allana \nSukanya Baskar \nArtists\nAparna Nori \nArpan Mukherjee \nIndu Antony \nPhilippe Calia \nAparna Nori / Nalla Pilla\nAparna Nori (b. 1975) is a photo-based artist based in Bangalore\, India. She has a Master’s degree in Documentary filmmaking and works on commissioned assignments with magazines and creative teams. Aparna uses photography as a medium to explore ideas of memory\, nostalgia\, interpersonal connections and the connections with an environment around her. She includes diverse forms of expression in her practice with alternative photographic processes\, moving images and bookmaking. In 2019\, along with three other artists\, Indu Anthony\, Krishanu Chatterjee\, Vivek Muthuramalingam\, she conceptualised “Kānike”\, a collective and space intended for the practice of contemporary art with an intention to foster creativity and shape new directions in learning. \nArpan Mukherjee / Gola Vora Dhan\nArpan Mukherjee (b. 1977) has studied BFA and MFA in printmaking from Visva-Bharati University\, Santiniketan. Immediate surroundings and personal interpretation of daily life are the basis of his work. He questions and critiques the discrimination\, the political and economic state of society through research and documentation. For his works which are mostly process-based\, he uses various 19th-century photographic mediums. Arpan is among the very few artists who work with ‘alternative photography’ in the country and has developed a practice-based research studio of the historical photographic process in Santiniketan\, named ‘Studio Goppo’. He has participated in a number of exhibitions and workshops and has given lectures on photographic history as well as his own works\, both nationally and internationally. In 2010\, he was awarded ‘Photographer of the year’ from Better Photography. Presently he is teaching as Associate Professor in the department of printmaking at Visva-Bharati University. \nIndu Antony / Ivar\nIndu Antony (b. 1982) is a transdisciplinary artist based out of Bangalore and Kerala\, India. She is known to explore tonalities of inward discussions that later burst out into communal spaces. Her work primarily revolves around the notion of spaces and their intangible character in relation to the gendered body as a site of representation by understanding feministic stands which gives way to performances and installations. Indu has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in India and abroad including Feminist Art Collective\, Canada (2020); House17\, Luxembourg (2019); Jimei x Arles Festival\, China (2019); Chennai Photo Biennale (2019); Serendipity Arts Festival\, Goa (2018); Kochi-Muziris Biennale Collateral\, (2018-19); FotoFest Biennale\, Houston (2018); Queer Asia Photo Exhibition\, London (2017) and Photo Kathmandu\, Nepal (2015). For the past ten years\, he has been commissioned by various agencies\, cultural and media institutions. His photo and video works have been featured in publications such as The New Yorker\, Le Monde or The Indian Quarterly. Philippe’s engagement with the visual arts also takes shape through writing\, education and curation. Since 2013\, he has been collaborating with PIX as a photo editor. Between 2015 and 2020\, he co-managed BIND\, a platform for photography with a public photobook library in Mumbai. His personal work has been awarded\, exhibited internationally\, and is held in private collections. He is on the board of the Trans-Asia Photography (TAP) Review; Founding Editor of PIX; Founder of the ASAP/art app; and has recently guest-edited Aperture Magazine’s 2021 summer issue on Delhi. \nSukanya Baskar / Scenographer\nSukanya Baskar is a curator\, writer and researcher. Her work has developed closely alongside archives\, with a focus on photography and moving image. Previously\, she was working with PIX magazine as a Researcher and Design Consultant. As a part of her graduation project she worked on the photobook\, ‘Witness: Kashmir 1986–2016 / Nine Photographers’ (Yaarbal Books\, 2017) edited by Sanjay Kak\, featured on the New York Times’ list of Best of photobooks of 2017. SUMMARY:Discover the art of French Cooking with Chef Sahil MEHTA
DESCRIPTION:France is internationally recognized for its gastronomy and way of life. Since 2010\, the French gastronomic meal and its rituals have been recognized as an intangible UNESCO cultural heritage. The special attention paid to the pleasures of the table can also be found in everyday life. The French are very attached to the three-meal day. \nIn France\, the art of living is first and foremost about eating well. Ranked as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage\, the fame of French cuisine comes from the many chefs who have been able to demonstrate their expertise abroad. Pastries\, baked goods\, traditional recipes\, exceptional wines and culinary curiosities: each region has its own specialities. \nJoin us for a special session on 07/10 at 6:00 PM on the Art of French Cooking with renowned Chef Sahil Mehta\, who will take us through his journey and give us an insight into his kitchen. \nRegister for the webinarChef Sahil MEHTA speaks\nWell\, where do I start from about my journey and love for France? \nI was all 13 years when my stepdad and mom decided to tell us at home that we were moving to Paris\, where stands the headquarters of UNESCO\, where my stepdad was getting posted. \nI must admit\, I was a tough nut to crack for this moving deal\, however when I did the initial few months were a struggle till I moved into schooling in September 1993\, all of 13 years with my long hair ( which is far from the current hairdo )\, long story short moving to September\, I was privileged enough to study at one of the finest schools in Paris L’ecole bilingue de serves \, instantly I made some great friends from all across the world friendships that I carry forward till date almost two decades plus. \nWhile growing up\, wed often have the privilege to be going out as I was lucky enough to be born in a family with fine taste\, the sound of the kitchen from restaurants cafes always pleased me to hear pretty waitresses say Qui excited me to join this beautiful profession. \nAt school\, we had a full-fledged cafeteria serving some great meals. The restaurants on champs would fascinate me at times when we get bored from the school meals we’d hop to the boulangerie infant of the school and buy the sandwich Jambon beurre or sandwich poulet. \nIn the morning we would have this young lady come outside our school gate and serve us hot and fresh-baked Pain au Chocolat’s and Croissants. I guess that is where I developed my love for food and decided after school I would\nspecialize in this wonderful profession. \nI would also visit Delhi every 6 months for my vacation and miss the smell of fresh early morning baked bread\, as at that point of time people here hardly spoke about such products. \nThis as a young teenager made my decision even stronger and in ’96 after my school\, I forced my dad to take me to Santos Dumont Ecole hotelier in Saint Cloud\, Paris\, France. \nWhere I arrived the first day in jeans to which my School’s Dean said” no jeans young man”. \nThe kitchen and state of art equipment fascinated me but least did I know that I was in for a surprise. \nI was not joining a hotel school but a military school. However\, today when I look back\, it has made me a much more disciplined and organized person and has also made me realize my vast knowledge of Wines\, Cheese and Several Dishes. \nI was trained in Decoupage de Fruits de Mer et Fromage\, Flambage\, Bar Management\, Restaurant Management\, a hard core Food and Beverage course. \nNot only did I learn\, but got an opportunity to work in Hotels and organizations like the Ritz\, Bristol\, Salon Wilson\, Travellers Club\, Hotel Baltimore\, Potel et Chabot\, Roland Gaross and Unesco. \nThen I came back to India to seek opportunities. \nIn the year 2008\, I was supposed to buy a cake for a friend’s birthday and went to a popular hotel’s bakery shop to buy an opera cake\, having had the best and being used to that quality I was shocked at what I ate and served my guests that to form such a big group. \nThis incident made me realize the need for good Bakery and Pastry products in our country\, so I decided to fly back to Paris and study again at Ecole Lenotre\, (the Mecca\, the Harvard) of bakery and pastry schools. \nI did an extensive course specializing in Bread\, Viennoiserie\, Chocolate and Confectionery and specialized in setting up bakeries and pastry shops. \nI also\, ensure to go back every year to upgrade my skills to institutes like Ducasse. \nCame Back and the rest like they say is history. \nIf I have to sum\, France made me a very disciplined person\, it also made me realize my abilities as a human and taught me le savoir-faire francais\, off it wasn’t for my education and studying the profession I am in at the Mecca I wouldn’t have reached so far in life. So like I say India has my soul but France has my heart.
